Basic Computing THE EASY WAY TO LEARN

Need Help Using Your Laptop or Desktop PC?

One-to-one computer help for beginners, returning users, and anyone who wants technology explained clearly and patiently. In person or online, we help you feel more confident using your computer in everyday life.

Our Services

Based in Scotland, we provide friendly, down-to-earth computer support for anyone who wants to feel more confident using technology. Whether you are completely new to computers, returning to them after a break, or simply trying to keep up with new tools and changes, we take the time to explain things clearly, calmly, and at your pace.

In-person computer support session

In-Person Support

Best for calm, face-to-face support.

We offer friendly, one-to-one computer help across the Scottish Central Belt. Sessions can be at your home, workplace, a local library, or even a café (wherever you feel most comfortable). You can use your own device, or if you don’t have one yet, you can still learn using a laptop provided by Basic Computing.

Online support via video call

Online Support

Best for distance learning.

Prefer to stay put, or live outside the Scottish Central Belt? No problem. We can support you online using video calls and screen sharing, so you can follow along on your own device. It’s the same patient, plain-English help (just over the internet).

Help finding the right computer

Help Finding the Right Computer

Best choice for purchasing help.

Whether you are looking for a brand new machine or a good-quality used computer, we help you choose something that suits your needs and budget. Everything is explained clearly, so you only pay for what you actually need.

Group computer tutoring session

Group Sessions

Best for teams and community groups.

Need to support a few people at once? We offer group tutoring for businesses, charities, and community groups. Sessions can take place at your workplace, church, or community hall, and we keep things friendly and easy to follow. Please note: for group bookings, laptops/computers will need to be provided for attendees.

Support for children and additional needs

Additional Support Needs

Best for learners who may benefit from extra support.

We have over a decade of experience supporting people with disabilities, and we tailor sessions to suit the person, not the other way around. You can book one-to-one support or a group session. Whether the goal is learning the basics, building confidence with everyday tasks, or working on a fun project like a short video, digital art, or a simple creative idea.

FAQ

Find answers to the most frequently asked questions about sessions, booking, and what to expect.

What can Basic Computing help me with?
Basic Computing can help with everyday computer tasks such as using email, browsing the internet, filling in online forms, organising files and folders, using documents, printing, video calls, staying safer online, and getting more comfortable with Windows computers. We can also help with specific problems, such as setting up a new device, understanding error messages, or learning how to use a programme or website.
Do I need to be a complete beginner?
No. You do not need to be a complete beginner. Some people come to us because they are starting from scratch, while others already use technology but feel unsure about certain tasks or want to build more confidence. The sessions are shaped around what you need help with, not around a fixed level.
Where do in-person sessions take place?
In-person sessions can take place somewhere comfortable and suitable, such as your home, workplace, a local library, café, community space, or another agreed location. We will discuss this with you before the session so it feels practical, safe, and easy to access.
What areas do you cover for in-person support?
We offer in-person sessions across parts of the Scottish Central Belt, including Glasgow, Falkirk, Stirling, and surrounding areas. If you are not sure whether your area is covered, just get in touch and we will let you know.
Do you offer online computer support?
Yes. Online sessions are available if you prefer to learn from home or live outside the in-person support area. These sessions can be done using a video call and, where helpful, screen sharing. We keep everything calm and step by step, so you do not need to feel confident with video calls before starting.
Do I need my own computer or laptop?
Not always. If you already have a computer, laptop, or device you want to learn on, it is usually best to use that because it helps you practise on what you will use day to day. If you do not have a suitable device yet, we can discuss options and may be able to support you using a device provided for the session, depending on the type of booking.
Do you provide help with tablets and phones?
Our main focus is Windows laptops and desktop computers, but we can often help with tablets and phones too, especially for everyday tasks like email, video calls, browsing the internet, apps, settings, photos, and online services. If you are not sure whether we can help with your device, just get in touch and tell us what you need support with.
Can you help me choose the right computer?
Yes. We offer help finding the right computer, whether you are looking for a new machine or a good-quality used one. The aim is to help you choose something that suits your needs, budget, and confidence level, without paying for features you do not really need.
Do you support people with additional support needs?
Yes. Basic Computing offers patient, tailored support for people with additional support needs or disabilities. Sessions can be adapted to the person, their pace, and what they want to achieve. This could include everyday digital skills, confidence-building, creative projects, or support using technology in a way that feels comfortable and useful.
Do you offer group bookings?
Yes. Group sessions are available for community groups, charities, workplaces, churches, clubs, and other organisations. These sessions are useful when several people would benefit from learning together. For group bookings, the organisation normally needs to provide the computers or laptops for attendees.
How do I book a session?
You can book by using the contact form on the website, emailing hello@basiccomputing.co.uk, or calling (+44) 07450967824. It helps to include what you would like support with, where you are based, whether you prefer in-person or online support, and anything else that would help us plan the right session for you.
