UNDERSTAND THE IDEA

A file is something you have saved

A photograph, a checklist and a music symbol representing different kinds of files.
A photo, a list or a sound recording can each be a file.
What am I going to do?

You are going to open Packing list.txt and read what is inside.

What will I learn?

You will learn what a file is and how an app shows its saved contents.

A file is a saved item, such as a photo, a letter or a list. A folder keeps files together. An app is a program that lets you view or work with them. Opening a file asks an app to show its contents.

Photo, letter and list files are kept in a folder and opened with suitable apps.
Name, type and location

Our file is called Packing list.txt. The .txt ending identifies it as a text file, and Documents is its saved location. This ending is called a file name extension. Windows may hide extensions; our example shows them.

File Explorer shows Packing list.txt in Documents, with its name and .txt extension enlarged separately.
