Fictional content. Real learning.
The Learning Hub uses imaginative examples to help people learn computer skills in a friendly practice environment. This notice explains what those examples represent and how to raise a concern.
Fictional people, places and situations
Unless clearly identified otherwise, the characters, example people, organisations, messages, stories, websites, events and scenarios created for the learning activities are fictional. They are not accounts of real events, genuine correspondence, customer testimonials or statements about an identifiable person.
Euan, the tutor behind Basic Computing, is a real person. Basic Computing is a real service. References to real software, manufacturers, services and products are also not fictional. Links to external websites lead outside the simulated practice environment.
Fictional characters are not presented as real people or as endorsing this service. If a character or scenario appears to identify you or someone else, please tell us so that we can review it.
Songs, artwork and generated material
The practice desktop includes fictional performers, albums, songs, illustrations and other creative material made or supplied for the project. Some images and other creative material are made with the assistance of artificial intelligence. Generated pictures may illustrate an idea rather than record a real person, place, product or event.
Humorous names, visual references and imaginative scenes are included to make learning approachable. They are not presented as recordings, releases, artwork or endorsements by any real performer, record label or other organisation. These materials are not intended to infringe another person’s rights.
AI generation, fictional naming and an educational purpose do not by themselves establish that material is free of third-party rights. This notice does not certify the legal status of every asset or replace any permission or licence that may be required.
Product names and trade marks
Real product names, trade marks and recognisable interface references are used to identify and explain the technology being taught. Rights in third-party names, logos, software, designs and other protected material remain with their respective owners.
The Learning Hub is an independent Basic Computing project. References to Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, Apple, YouTube or other products do not imply sponsorship, approval, partnership or endorsement by their owners.
The practice desktop and its apps are educational simulations inside this website. They are not the actual operating system or commercial apps they help learners understand. Their appearance and behaviour may differ from a real product or version.
Educational purpose and respect for rights
The learning materials and practice activities are provided to help people understand and use computers. Basic Computing intends to respect copyright, trade marks and other applicable rights. An educational purpose or a statement of good intentions is not a blanket exemption from those rights.
Nothing in this notice waives another person’s rights, excludes rights or remedies available under applicable law, or grants permission to copy, redistribute or commercially use third-party material. Any applicable licence or separately stated permission governs reuse of that material.
Tell us about a concern
If you believe any material infringes your rights, misidentifies someone or misleadingly suggests an association, please use the Basic Computing contact form. Include the page address, the specific image, song or other item, the nature of your concern, and details of the rights you hold or represent. Please provide a way for us to reply.
Basic Computing will review concerns and consider appropriate action, which may include correcting, replacing or removing the material. You do not need to provide sensitive identity documents in your initial message.
